Program Description:
It takes courage to report the news in many parts of the world. Each year, the International Women’s Media Foundation honors that courage and promotes the importance of a free press with its Courage in Journalism Awards, the only international awards that recognize the bravery of women journalists. Nominees risk political persecution, physical injury and death in their efforts to expose corruption and champion human rights. The Global Report on Women in the News Media is examining the structure of the news media industry worldwide from a gender perspective in order to document the career progress of women and use the results to advocate for change. Launched in 2009, this ground-breaking research will document where women stand in professional, decision-making and governance levels in the media industry. It will survey newspaper, broadcast and cable media companies in some 66 countries. Data are expected to illustrate the extent to which women have advanced in reporting, editing, producing and other news occupations, as well as in administrative, policy and governance levels. It will also identify factors which both contribute to as well as inhibit gender equality. Research will be conducted in 2009, with an anticipated publication date of spring 2010. Reporting on Agriculture and Women: Africa promises to energize the way the media covers agriculture and rural development. Using a model developed during a four-year project on reporting on HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria(http://www.iwmf.org/subcatdetail.aspx?sc=aidsafrica) , the IWMF’s new initiative will train journalists in effectively covering agriculture and the role of women within agriculture and rural development. Goals include raising the quantity and quality of reporting on farming and rural development, focusing more of the reporting on the importance of women to the economics of rural areas, and creating more gender equality in newsrooms. The project will also highlight the critical role women play in agriculture and rural development.
