Lindsey Combs, 32, was planning to have the first ultrasound scan of her pregnancy this week before the hairstylist was fatally crushed by a gravel truck in front of her home in Martinez, her grieving fiance said Tuesday.

Combs, who was nearly two months pregnant, had been asked to move her car away from the truck, which was part of a city project, when the trailer full of gravel overturned on top of the car on Monday afternoon, according to police and witness accounts.

Combs’ 4-year-old daughter witnessed the incident, said the girl’s father and Combs’ fiance, 39-year-old Anderson Pamilton, in an interview Tuesday morning.

“I am devastated, upset, mostly upset that this was totally avoidable,” he said. “Just a roller coaster of emotions.”

Pamilton lived with Combs near the intersection of Shell Avenue and Pine Street, where a new sidewalk was being put in by the city-contracted construction crew.

“She was a great mother. I envy what she had with my daughter — the bond they had was inseparable,” he said.

Cal/OSHA, the state agency that regulates workplace safety, is investigating the cause of Monday’s incident, which occurred at about 1 p.m.

Friends, relatives and neighbors brought flowers to Combs’ and Hamilton’s home on Tuesday. A makeshift memorial grew on the corner.

“She was so excited about having a baby,” said neighbor Amy Dubinsky, 64. “They were a young couple trying to make it. It’s devastating. It’s not right.”

The truck that overturned was operated by JJR Construction, a subcontractor working on the city project, officials said.
