Man kills himself after eating too much pot candy: family - NY Daily News

Luke Goodman, 23, of Tulsa, Okla., killed himself while on vacation in Colorado Saturday. His family believe his death is due to Goodman eating too many edible marijuana candies.

The family of a 23-year-old Tulsa man believes excessive marijuana consumption from edible candies led Luke Goodman to kill himself while on vacation in Colorado.

Goodman, a recent graduate of Oral Roberts University, was at a ski resort in Keystone, Colo., when he and his cousin Caleb Fowler purchased $78 worth of marijuana and pot-laced edibles, reports TV station CBS 4 in Denver.

The two decided to eat some peach tart candies, but Goodman ultimately ate five of them after he didn't immediately feel the effects. The recommended dose is only one piece of candy and the warning label states it can take two hours for the drug to kick in, the station reports.

Eventually Fowler said his cousin became weird and incoherent — speaking in a nonsensical manner.

"He would make eye contact with us, but didn't see us, didn't recognize our presence almost. He had never got close to this point, I had never seen him like this," Fowler told the station.

Later that night, when Luke Goodman was alone in his room, he turned his handgun on himself.

"It was completely a reaction to the drugs," Goodman's mother, Kim Goodman, told the station.

She now wants to spread awareness of the dangers of these edible products.

"It was 100% the drugs," she said. "It was completely because of the drugs — he had consumed so much of it."

Luke Goodman was a happy person and showed no signs of depression or suicidal thoughts before that night, she said.

"It was completely out of character for Luke … there was no depression or anything that would leave us being concerned, nothing like that," she told the station.

The family did not return a call seeking comment.

The Summit County coroner told the station it would take a few weeks to complete the toxicology report on Goodman's body.

Goodman’s mother, Kim, wants people to be aware of the danger with edible marijuana products like the ones above.

This is the third case of a death resulting from marijuana edibles in the state since it legalized marijuana in January 2014, the station reported.

Luke's Facebook page has been flooded with messages from loved ones since his death. Many of them mention how happy Luke Goodman was and how he spread that joy to those around him.

"You were a light to everyone who knew you. You were so talented yet so humble. I will always remember the times that we shared. You have made a great impact on my life and I will forever remember you. You are loved because you showed love," wrote a college classmate named Jorden Bonanno.
