VIDEO-Anger over Afghan hospital strike | Reuters.com

At least 19 staff and patients were killed when this hospital in the Afghan city of Kunduz was bombed, possibly by U.S. forces during an air strike. The White House says it expects "a full accounting of the facts and circumstances" of the incident. Aid group Medecins Sans Frontieres runs the hospital. Its director of operations says there was no excuse. (SOUNDBITE)(English) BART JANSSENS, MEDECINS SANS FRONTIERES DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS, SAYING: "The hospital is there since four years. It's a large hospital. The compound is larger than a football ground and we have several times communicated through the GPS co-ordinates the exact location of the hospital to all warring parties so we really don't understand and we definitely don't accept the notification of collateral damage as we heard in the beginning of the first reaction." MSF says nearly 200 patients and staff were inside the hospital, the only one in the region which can deal with major injuries. The United Nations human rights chief led a chorus of condemnation, suggesting an attack on a hospital could amount to a war crime. The Afghan Ministry of Defence said in a statement Taliban fighters had attacked the hospital and were using the building "as a human shield". It said during the firefight, a rocket landed close to the hospital, wounding civilians.
