VIDEO-UN's Ban calls for Mideast calm | Reuters.com

Israeli policemen try to resuscitate an Israeli man who was run over by a Palestinian motorist. The victim is believed to have been using a club to hit Palestinian protesters before he was struck by the vehicle. The driver later turned himself in. It's still not known if it was a deliberate act, but it came amid an escalation of violence between the Israelis and Palestinians over the last few weeks. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on a surprise visit to the region, is joining the calls for peace. (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.N. SECRETARY-GENERAL BAN KI-MOON, SAYING "No society should have to live in fear. No society can afford to see its youth suffer in hopelessness. If we do not act fast, the dynamics on the ground may only get worse with the serious repercussions in and beyond Israel and Palestine." The outbreak of street violence over the last few weeks has been fueled by confrontations around Jerusalem's al Aqsa mosque complex, a site revered by both Muslims and Jews. Palestinians fear increasing visits by Jewish groups to al-Aqsa are eroding longtime Muslim religious control there. Both Israeli and Palestinian leaders have sought to calm tensions...and assure residents that the mosque compound will remain open and accessible to both Muslims and Jews..but as clashes continue on the streets there are few signs that those efforts are making any headway.
