A woman has been killed and five people injured in a knife attack in Russell Square, central London.
This is everything we know about the incident:
- Six people were stabbed as an armed man attacked people with a knife in Russell Square
- 19-year-old suspect is a Norwegian national of Somalian origin
- Injured people are British, Israeli, American and Austrian
- Police say no evidence of radicalisation found
- The incident happened outside the Imperial Hotel on the central London square.
- One American woman in her 60s was pronounced dead at the scene.
- Two other women and three men were injured in the attack. Two of those people remain in hospital.
- Police were called to the incident just after 22.30 last night and armed officers attended the scene within five minutes.
- Officers tasered the 19-year-old suspect and arrested him. He was under police guard in hospital and is now being questioned at a south London police station.
- At first, police said that mental health is a significant factor in this case, but terrorism remains one line of inquiry for the motive.
- However, in a statement at 9am, they removed the mention of terror from their statement.
- Armed Met Police officers on patrol this morning at London tube stations and landmarks to reassure public.
- Most cordons around Russell Square have now been re-opened.
- Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley said: "This was a tragic incident resulting in the death of one woman and five others being injured. Early indications suggest that mental health was a factor in this horrific attack. However we are keeping an open mind regarding the motive and terrorism remains one line of inquiry being explored."
- Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said: "I urge all Londoners to remain calm and vigilant. Please report anything suspicious to the policeā. We all have a vital role to play as eyes and ears for our police and security services and in helping to ensure London is protected."
