VIDEO - Journalist Mistakes 2 Black-Led Films as 1 at Golden Globes | News | teleSUR English

The awards show saw a journalist mix up films with Black leads, while Trump has characteristically responded to Meryl Streep’s tirade against his bigotry.

As usual, Hollywood’s first award show of the year, the Golden Globes, was rife with a number of noteworthy incidents.

In the blend was the casually racist gaffe of journalist Jenna Bush. As she approached actor and producer Pharrell Williams Sunday evening at the awards show to ask him about his new Golden Globe-nominated film, she called it “Hidden Fences” — mixing and mashing up two award-nominated films with Black leads, "Hidden Figures" and "Fences."

“You know, because all black people _______ (fill in the blank): 1) are the same, 2) fit into one movie 3) don’t deserve to have more than one nomination or 4) all of the above. If you chose choice No. 4, you are correct!” wrote The Root’s Danielle Young.

In response, Twitter users, mostly Black, jumped at the chance to produce comedic tweets in response to the blunder with the hashtag #HiddenFences.

Later, actor and director Michael Keaton managed to make the same mistake as he presented the award for best-supporting actress, sparking the #GoldenGlobesErrors hashtag, which combined titles of movies with predominantly Black casts.

That same evening, when the prolific actor Meryl Streep took to stage to accept her Cecil B. Demille Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, she dedicated the better part of her speech to speak about how U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's ascension to presidency has lent to a more openly xenophobic and bigoted society.

She cited the instance of when Trump mocked a disabled journalist in November 2015, saying it was this incident that stunned her most.

“Disrespect invites disrespect, violence invites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others we all lose,” she told the crowd.

The morning after, right on cue, Trump took to Twitter to attack Streep, calling her “overrated” and “a Hillary flunky.”
