The Black Hawk crashed off the southern coast of the nation, which is currently embroiled in a deadly civil war.
The helicopter crashed amid a training exercise about 20 miles from the southern coast of Yemen at 4pm GMT, according to a statement from US Central Command (CENTCOM).
CENTCOM spokesman Colonel John Thomas said: ”When the incident took place the helicopter was not very high above the water.”
Five service members were rescued following the incident, but one is missing with a furious search underway.
