- The Stroll - Wikipedia
- The Stroll was both a slow rock 'n' roll dance[1] and a song that was popular in the late 1950s.[2]
- Billboard first reported that "The Stroll" might herald a new dance craze similar to the "Big Apple" in December 1957.[3][4]
- In the dance two lines of dancers, men on one side and women on the other, face each other, moving in place to the music. Each paired couple then steps out and does a more elaborate dance up and down between the rows of dancers.[5] Dick Clark noted the similarity of the dance to the Virginia reel.[6] It was first performed to "C. C. Rider" by Chuck Willis on American Bandstand. Link Wray's "Rumble" was also a popular tune for doing the stroll.
- The Diamonds had a hit song entitled The Stroll in 1957.
- When 1950s nostalgia came to the forefront in the 1970s, The Stroll saw renewed public awareness. It was used in the film American Graffiti (1973) during the scene at the high school dance and is mentioned in some of the lyrics in the musical Grease. Led Zeppelin's 1950s rock homage "Rock and Roll" mentions the Stroll.
- The Stroll was an integral part of most episodes of the dance TV series Soul Train, where host and creator Don Cornelius dubbed it the "Soul Train Line."

- Get Your Booty to the Poll
- In the middle of the pandemic, while many of us were out of work- we decided that we wanted to help influence the election! Angela, our fearless director, thought it would be a great idea to have exotic dancers from some of Atlanta's finest gentlemen's clubs to tell their patrons and fans to 'Get their booties to the poll!'
- Angela teamed up with Paul Fox, a prop master-turned-producer based out of Atlanta- and it was on. The pair recruited a slew of talented filmmakers and dancers, started a GoFundMe called 'Angela and Paul want black people to vote', and filmed their message in one day at the end of July, all while fearing the second wave of COVID-19.
- The entire crew was made up of volunteers who were dedicated to the message and idea of increasing the voter turn-out amongst the black male demographic. We hope that our passionate message becomes your reality when you take your booty to the poll and vote this election cycle.

- VH1 Abruptly Ends "Sorority Sisters" Amid Backlash
- After receiving weeks of Twitter backlash and online criticism for its portrayal of black sorority girls, the network has decided to bring its reality show Sorority Sisters to an abrupt end this Friday night. The final three episodes will air back-to-back beginning at 9:30 pm.
- Sorority Sisters follows nine Atlanta women from four historically black sororities. The show filmed this summer, and VH1 quietly announced the series just four days before it debuted in December. You might not have even known the show existed. Promotional materials were released with a whimper '-- the series didn't even have a social media presence until three days before it debuted. Then it premiered December 15 to an impressive 1.3 million viewers and an instant wave of backlash.

- Sorority Sisters isn't a good show by any measure. The sprawling cast's nine main stars are hard to keep track of, and the drama feels canned. (Two rival sorority sisters '-- or "sorors," as the show calls them '-- fight over their competing clothing boutiques.) But lots of reality TV is bad. The difference is that most reality-TV stars are only representing themselves. If they have a trashy moment, it's theirs alone. On Sorority Sisters, they're representing Greek organizations with a rich history.
- "Although the sisters on Sorority Sisters don't wear their letters on air, they still destroy the brand with their manufactured bickering, fabricated conflicts and out-of-place sorority calls," wrote blogger Ernie Suggs, a member of the black fraternity Alpha Phi Alpha.

- Toni Morrison and Coretta Scott King were Alpha Kappa Alphas. Condoleezza Rice was an Alpha Chi Omega. Zora Neale Hurston was a Zeta Phi Beta. What would they think of "grown women screaming at each other, cussing, calling each other names and in the same breath calling out the name of their Greek affiliating by saying, 'I'm a proud member of _____ Sorority, Inc.?'" asked one Alpha Kappa Alpha.
- After 11 days of online backlash, Alpha Kappa Alpha suspended two of the show's stars, April McRae and Rwanda Hammond. McRae responded on Twitter two days later with the Maya Angelou poem "Still I Rise." ("You may write me down in history/With your bitter, twisted lies,/You may trod me in the very dirt/But still, like dust, I'll rise.")
- As criticism ran wild on Twitter with the hashtag #BoycottSororitySisters, sponsors began pulling their support for their show. The NBA, Victoria's Secret, McDonalds, Sports Authority, Hallmark, Honda, Ford, State Farm, Crayola, and Carmex all pulled their ads from airing during the show.

- Ava DuVernay, an Alpha Kappa Alpha and critically acclaimed director of Selma, also threw her support behind the show's opponents.

- Without sponsors, it's difficult or perhaps impossible for the show to go on. A petition to end the show now has more than 78,000 signatures, though it mistakenly identifies Mona Scott-Young, the executive producer of Love & Hip-Hop who was attached to an early version of Sorority Sisters, as someone who is currently involved with the show.
- Last week, VH1 aired a special episode exploring why each cast member decided to join the show and the controversy surrounding the series.
- "Based on the feedback we saw on Twitter after Sorority Sisters: The Dialogue debuted last week, it was clear that the audience wanted to see the stories of the cast play out more fully," a rep for the network said in a statement to BuzzFeed News. "We felt it would be best to run the remaining episodes back to back, bringing the season full circle."
- While VH1 hasn't definitively canceled future seasons of the show yet, the network's decisions thus far don't look promising: The final episode will start at 11:10 p.m. and end just past midnight. It won't be repeated later that night for West Coast audiences.
- It looks like this could be the final nail in the coffin for Sorority Sisters '-- and if it is, I doubt many will miss VH1's most controversial show.

- Black Futures Lab
- If we've learned anything from the 2016 elections, it's that Black progressive political power is key to improving our communities and our lives. Despite the obstacles we face'--state violence, mass incarceration, voter suppression, disproportionate poverty'--increased political power is within our grasp. Most importantly, building political power must come from us and by us: we know what we want, we know what we need, and we have the raw resources in our neighborhoods to build Black political power.
- We engage Black voters over the long term, we empower Black voters to shape the policy discussions that affect our lives, and we energize a new generation of elected officials and decision makers who care about issues facing Black communities. We experiment with policy solutions and community alternatives that can be put into place at the local and state level.
- And we will know we have achieved success when Black people are making decisions on our own behalf, when we are represented by people who have our best interests at the forefront of the policy agenda, when our communities are actively and consistently engaging and engaged, and when the conditions in our communities allow Black people to thrive.
- This is why we built the Black Futures Lab.
- We help build our power, amplify our power, and direct our power.
- Can you help us build political power for all Black people?
