- I just finished listening to episode 1761 and I wanted to
- fill you in on the India Pakistan situation and why I believe that this
- is something that will not be resolved in our Lifetime. Both countries
- since creation by the British which led to
- about 2 million dead with some of the most unspeakable human on human
- violence known to mankind have been fighting over this land.
- The British when they leave do leave a trail of blood and
- Horror something similar to the Israel conflict where they promised the
- land to the Turks, the Iranians, the Arabs and the Jews (a fascinating
- podcast I can recommend on this subject here https://youtu.be/2vsX4iQouOc?si=BIBHRl-UV8W9UTFX)
- . The principle of partition was: for the British terrirories, the
- Hindu majority part became India and the Muslim majority became
- Pakistan. The vassal kings in India were given a choice to choose who
- they wanted to join. The Hindu king of Kashmir decided
- at the very last moment to join India, though through demographic
- change Kashmir had become muslim majority (Deja vu Europe?). Pakistan
- didnt like this and launched an invasion to occupy 1/3 of Kashmir parts
- of which they gave China after China erased Tibet
- off the map. Its very sensitive for Pakistan for their identity as
- Pakistan stands for Panjab Afghan Kashmir Indus - Stan (land of those
- For the Hindu Indians, Kashmir is a very holy place, all
- the Hindu gods are believed to live in the Himalayas. The abrhamic
- religions like Islam and christianity had a problem with this and
- Churchill didnt like the Hindus and their religion he
- is also quoted as saying "Indians are a beastly people with a beastly
- religion”. Several bible followers today even curse the Indians as the
- devil worshippers and would like to see us killed unfortunately.
- When the country split, even though India was bigger,
- Pakistan got the larger military assets and the army as lot of. the
- peoples of the Pakistan region were warriors and mercenaries. India
- though went through the cycle of socialism and glimpses
- of capitalism though focussing on development
- The two countries have fought several wars 3 major (I have
- family members who were injured in one of them) and though India has
- had the upper hand, the Pakistanis seem to always claim victory.
- The other aspect of all this is how the politicians on
- both sides have weaponised this to play a psyop on the people to get
- them to sacrifice and spend unbelievable amounts on weapon and armed
- forces. The Indian side goes hey look we are so much
- better than Pakistan, which though true is a bit low bar. The
- politicians use the outsider Pakistan to get their agendas. Across the
- border in Pakistan its treated as a holy war and a duty to destroy the
- Idol worshippers and non believers. Given their strategic
- location (bordering Iran which is a Shia enemy for Pakistan,
- Afghanistan and China) Pakistan was the convenient ally for the west for
- their dirty work and now for China to tackle India and the west.
- Therefore Pakistan always got backing from the west in terms
- of Military tech and weapons which enabled the bankrupt country to wage
- The worst part of all this is that for Pakistan Kashmir is
- only a frontier to conquer and break up India. For India the fear is
- that if Pakistan takes Kashmir, the Indian muslims will chose religion
- over country and it will be over for the Hindus
- Hope this gives some neutral context though I have skin in the game on the Indian side

- Rwanda and DRC BOTG
- I am currently listening to your latest episode and
- just reached the part where you are talking about the deal with the DRC
- It happens that I have a client in Rwanda, which is
- lake Kivu, right on the border with Goma in the DRC. Due to the nature
- of their business my client deals a great dela with the Rwandan
- Their take is that the M23 rebels that have
- recently ramped up and take over a Goma and the neighbouring land.
- While ethnicity does have a role to play in this conflict (they are an
- ethnically Tutsi group, same as the gov in Rwanda) the
- belief is that they are seeking to secede from the DRC and form an
- independent country. The area that they have taken over is one of the
- richest areas for mineral in the World.
- Due to the corruption and instability of the DRC
- the only people that historically have invested there are the Chinese at
- less than ideal terms, as it had proven too risky for the west.
- The rebels believe that by creating their own
- country they can provide security and order to such a point where it
- becomes investable by the west.

- COBOL etc .. boots on the ground
- It seems obvious John's never been in the shit.
- The features of COBOL are straightforward, yes.
- when you start talking about 5 million lines of production COBOL it's a
- nightmare. The features of the language are limited, which also makes
- it more difficult to do common and important things, which creates
- bloat. So real world COBOL applications are not as cool as Java, for
- instance, which has features to create a kind of "language of structure"
- that allows quick interpretation, learning, and modification.
- Bad variable naming, poor algorithms, kluges, hacks, bad managerial input all create bad unmaintainable code in any language.
- COBOL is not "simple" in a real world application.
- No software is simple once it starts doing anything substantive.

- Zelenskyy’s War on Democracy: A Dictatorship in Disguise
- By Alexander van Koningsbruggen
- In what can only be described as a staggering abuse of executive power, the Zelenskyy administration has now extended its campaign of internal repression to include Ukraine’s fifth President, Petro Poroshenko, and the outspoken political commentator and former presidential advisor, Oleksiy Arestovych. Under the thin veil of “national security,” these sanctions are nothing short of a calculated, illegal maneuver to sideline political competitors ahead of future elections.
- Let us be unequivocal: the Ukrainian Constitution expressly forbids the application of sanctions against its own citizens. Yet, that has not deterred Volodymyr Zelenskyy. To date, his government has imposed sanctions on over 8,300 individuals—journalists, opposition figures, and business leaders—without due process, without legal clarity, and without accountability. The sanctions regime, originally designed to shield the nation from foreign aggression, is now weaponized against the very people it was meant to protect.
- This shift is not merely alarming—it is authoritarian.
- Poroshenko, despite his checkered legacy, remains a central figure in Ukraine’s political landscape. Sanctioning him not for criminal conviction, but for his political stance, sets a dangerous precedent. Arestovych, meanwhile, has become a symbol of independent thought, sometimes abrasive, but always unflinchingly direct. Silencing them through financial and legal strangulation is not democracy—it is despotism cloaked in the language of statecraft.
- We must ask: what is Zelenskyy so afraid of?
- If his government is as secure and legitimate as it claims, why resort to these extrajudicial reprisals? The answer lies not in national security, but in political insecurity. As Ukraine prepares—perhaps one day—for post-war normalization, Zelenskyy seems intent on clearing the field of any viable competition. The sanctioning of rivals is not a sign of strength; it is the behavior of a leader teetering on the edge of control.
- What we are witnessing is the erosion of democratic safeguards. Sanctions, once reserved for foreign adversaries, have become a blunt instrument of internal suppression. The lack of judicial oversight, public transparency, or parliamentary consent in these decisions violates both domestic law and international human rights norms. The right to political participation, freedom of expression, and protection from arbitrary punishment are not optional—they are the bedrock of any legitimate government.
- Ukraine’s war with Russia does not give Zelenskyy the moral license to dismantle civil liberties at home. In fact, the opposite is true. In times of existential crisis, democratic principles must be guarded most zealously. Instead, the President’s behavior suggests not a wartime leader preserving democracy, but a man increasingly resembling the autocrats he once vowed to oppose.
- This is not the road to victory. It is the road to tyranny.
- And if Ukraine’s Western allies remain silent while Zelenskyy eviscerates the democratic rights of his own people, then they too become complicit in the undoing of the very values they claim to defend.
- The world must decide: will it support Ukraine’s future as a free republic, or merely Zelenskyy’s ambitions to rule it unchallenged?
