- Replacement Migration
- Is being in the united states illegally a civil or criminal offense?
- Being in the United States illegally, often referred to as unlawful presence, is primarily a **civil offense** rather than a criminal one. Here's a breakdown:
- - **Civil Offense**: Unlawful entry or presence in the U.S. violates immigration laws, specifically the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). This is typically handled as a civil matter through administrative processes like deportation or removal proceedings conducted by immigration authorities (e.g., Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE). Being undocumented or overstaying a visa generally does not result in criminal prosecution on its own.
- - **Criminal Offense**: Certain actions related to illegal immigration can be criminal. For example:
- - **Illegal entry** (entering the U.S. without inspection or authorization) is a misdemeanor under 8 U.S.C. § 1325, punishable by fines or up to 6 months in prison for a first offense.
- - **Illegal re-entry** after deportation (8 U.S.C. § 1326) is a felony, with penalties of up to 2 years in prison, or more if the individual has a criminal history.
- - Other related crimes, like using fraudulent documents or smuggling, can also lead to criminal charges.
- In practice, the distinction depends on the circumstances and enforcement priorities. Most undocumented immigrants face civil penalties (e.g., deportation) rather than criminal prosecution for simply being present unlawfully. However, specific actions like illegal entry or re-entry can trigger criminal charges.

- Lasalle corrections underbid California for the daily rate . IIRC, California wanted $125 per day per detainee. Lasalle wanted only $75 per day. So all the Lasalle jails were turned into immigration detentiom centers.

- Breast feeding is hard work!
- Baby Formula Daycare
- If you use a daycare or other childcare service, many refuse to give your baby pumped milk or homemade baby food.
- In some places these rules come from the state.
- have always and only imported formula from Germany. It's real milk.
- And, it's actually not that more expensive than high end chemical Nestle
- use it until the children were beyond 4 months old, and only to help
- fill the baby up for sleep (formula gives them a slower digestive
- process), for travel when keeping milk stored was difficult and my wife
- wouldn't be with me, or when we had to use childcare.
- For example, the day we needed to do the Greencard interview, or a series of doctors appointments, or church child care.
- Breastfeeding mom explains Victorian times
- In a recent show you were wondering about baby formula. As a new mom I have done research on this topic and I can give you a quick history of baby formula:
- Pre-victorian era, if a baby could not be breast-feed by their mother (say the mother died in childbirth) other arrangements like wetnurses (a woman who could nurse the baby) would be made. If a wetnurse was not available substitutes like cow's milk were used, however infant mortality was extremely likely as breast milk provides key nutrients and antibodies that help build a baby's immune system.
- In the victorian era people let the germ theory of desease get into their heads so they thought that if a scientist in a sterile lab could replicate something from the germ-filled real world, the lab version was "obviously better" that's when and why baby formula was invented. Despite male doctors telling women to use formula, most still breastfed because why pay for something you can get for free?
- In the twentieth-century formula only became popular during WWII as working mothers became a thing. Generations of women have now been told to prioritize careers over their children and have been brainwashed into thinking of baby formula like feeding your kids dino-nuggets instead of grilled chicken. It's not the best, but it's a convenience you can still feel good about. With more and more research showing the nutritional difference between formula and breastmilk this narrative is finally crumbling and all formula companies can do is make a new formula so they can go on trying to pretend it's just as good as breast milk.
- Answering your questions about infant formula and breastfeeding
- I am a certified lactation consultant and pediatric registered
- dietitian. Hoping that I can answer your questions about infant formula
- and breastfeeding that y'all were asking on the last show.
- some moms have always had trouble breastfeeding. The options for
- feeding your baby before formula were finding a wet nurse or making a
- homemade formula yourself. Homemade formula was usually made from
- diluted cow's or goat's milk with other ingredients added to try to make
- it more nutritionally appropriate. Straight cow's or goat's milk are
- NOT appropriate for infants due to the high amount of protein and other
- minerals that can't be filtered properly by the baby's immature kidneys.
- Homemade formulas typically had ingredients like cod liver oil added to
- provide vitamins D and A, as well as other ingredients. You can still
- find recipes on the internet such as here:
- formula was invented, this was viewed as an easy option for moms who
- had trouble breastfeeding. However, the formula companies wanted to make
- as much money and extend their market as much as they could. This led
- to a HUGE push in marketing of formula in the 70s, both in the U.S. as
- well as in other less developed countries. Nestle was one of the worst,
- aggressively pushing their formulas in developing countries and causing
- many moms to stop breastfeeding because they thought formula was
- healthier, with the sad result being malnutrition and death of many
- babies in these countries.
- outrage after this which resulted in the creation of the WHO
- "International Code of Marketing of Breast Milk Substitutes" in 1981
- (rules that countries could adopt that prohibited the unethical
- marketing of formula over breast milk, although participation by
- countries is voluntary). You can find the entire set of guidelines here :
- https://iris.who.int/bitstream/handle/10665/254911/WHO-NMH-NHD-17.1-eng.pdf
- pendulum has definitely swung back the other way today. Many hospitals
- are becoming "baby friendly," meaning they have rules in place to push
- breastfeeding rather than formula. These days, most educated women know
- that breast milk is best for their babies and most try to breastfeed.
- However, many women have trouble exclusively breastfeeding for a number
- of reasons: moms are having babies when they're older (less glandular
- tissue to make milk), the medicalization of childbirth (use of epidurals
- and increased C-section births prevents optimal initiation of
- breastfeeding), and also increased prevalence of chronic health problems
- in the moms, such as obesity and diabetes, which increase your risk of
- breastfeeding problems. I also have patients who do everything right but
- still produce barely any milk and have to rely on formula or who have
- horrible pain when they nurse and give up breastfeeding. Even when
- things go well, it is a LOT of work to breastfeed (or pump milk to
- bottle feed) and having done it with both of my daughters, I understand
- why exhausted, stressed out moms give it up for the ease of formula.
- Formula companies try to emulate breast milk as best they can, but it's
- just like any other processed food that can't compare to the natural
- thing. Most of my patients who can afford it are indeed opting for
- European formulas that are viewed as cleaner than American ones. There
- are milk banks that provide donor milk, but there is a limited supply so
- this is usually reserved for sick babies in the neonatal ICU. Selling
- breast milk is illegal, but there is a lot of informal sharing that goes
- on these days, especially with social media allowing people to connect
- in order to find a donor.
- What was used before Infant Formula BOTG
- Adam, you had questions on what predated baby formula, and i am sure you got so many answers you are sick of the explanations, but I will add what I know
- Baby formula was developed post-WWII to help deal with the orphan and abandoned children issue, as well as the starvation that was going on from wrecked economies in Europe and Asia. It was found that a mixture of oils, fats and fillers was not enough to feed infants, that a certain amount of milk proteins were required. It was developed from there by the big food players. Nestle had a big presence in that.
- prior to WWII, the standard "formula" was condensed milk with boiled and cooled water and sugar. Cows milk appears to be less rich than Human milk so the evaporated milk is a benefit. As kids got older, straight cow milk was a good substitute, what it lacks the baby can get from food.
- as a side note, this is one of the real marketing pushes of canned evaporated milk when it was first developed: it was pure, it was shelf stable, and it was free of possible contamination and pathogens - there was a serious concern about tuberculosis being passed in cow's milk in the late 1800's and early 1900's, especially in cities where there was a lot of TB.
- Traditionally you tried to get the kid on solid food as quickly as possible. It was not uncommon for the mom or caregiver to chew up her food, and pass the well chewed food to the baby via a kiss. A close friend of mine was raised in an orphanage in Korea and that was how she was fed as an infant, until she got some teeth of her own. She nursed her own daughter as long as possible, but as a young mom she was broke, so she transitioned her daughter to solid food the same way.
- There are networks now, here, for human breastmilk. It is about as shady and dark as the black market in raw milk now found in our rural areas, though less likely for the state police and county inspectors to do armed raids.
- (My favorite insanity of 2025 is that I could buy pot in a store but I have to buy milk and eggs from a guy I had to find through some guy who had to size me up for being an informant)
