- What the Bible doesn't say
- There's no verse that names abortion. There's no "you must not end a pregnancy."
- It doesn't say when a person begins. Conception, heartbeat, quickening and first breath have all been argued from different verses.
- It doesn't address the hard cases. There's nothing on rape, a threat to the mother's life, or a baby that can't survive. The modern legal questions are not addressed either.
- What the Bible does say
- God personally forms the child in the womb. "You… knit me together in my mother's womb… You saw me before I was born" (Psalm 139:13, 16). Job says God "created us both in the womb" (Job 31:15).
- God knows and calls people before birth. "I knew you before I formed you in your mother's womb" (Jeremiah 1:5).
- David speaks of himself as existing from conception. "I was born a sinner— yes, from the moment my mother conceived me" (Psalm 51:5). The verse is about sin, but it assumes David was a person from that moment.
- An unborn child responds to Christ. When Mary arrives, "the baby in my womb jumped for joy" (Luke 1:44). Luke uses the same Greek word, brephos, for the unborn John and for the newborn Jesus in Luke 2:12. He makes no distinction between them.
- The command not to murder applies to innocent human life. "You must not murder" (Exodus 20:13). Genesis 9:6 grounds it in being made in God's image.
