A controversial film inspired by the downfall of Dominique Strauss Kahn, the former head of the International Monetary Fund, is being screened in Cannes on Saturday, May 17.

It is the first time starring Gerard Depardieu is to be shown on the big screen in France. It could also be the last.

“Welcome to New York” is being released on video-on-demand websites, not in cinemas in the country.

The US producers of the film say they have faced pressure from the French establishment not to release the film.

“Welcome to New York” sees Depardieu play ‘Mr Deveraux’.There are several signs that the character is modelled on Strauss Kahn, known as DSK.

He who was once considered a front-runner to become the president of France, but he went on to face numerous allegations of corruption and was accused of rape by a hotel chamber maid in 2011.

He reached a multi-million euro settlement with the chamber maid.
